The Future of Capitalism: Tariffs, Growth & Market Shifts

Joao Gomes, senior vice dean for research, centers and academic initiatives at Wharton, joined a panel at Inc. Founders House to discuss tariffs, immigration, and other risks facing businesses amid recent market shifts. View his conversation with Mike Hofman, editor-in-chief of Inc. Magazine, by watching the video above.

Professor Gomes offered his insights on LinkedIn:

“Immigration policy will be far more damaging to U.S. innovation and entrepreneurship in the long run than tariffs.

That was one of the key points I discussed at Inc. Founders House, in conversation with Mike Hofman, editor-in-chief of Inc. Magazine. We talked about the broader macroeconomic challenges facing founders today – from the ripple effects of tariffs to tightening capital markets, slowing consumer demand, and growing global uncertainty.

Tariffs are a solution in search of a problem – and they’re not going away any time soon. But in the long run, I believe restrictions on immigration pose the greatest threat to the U.S. as a hub for entrepreneurship. What we’re doing on the immigration front will have lasting consequences for America’s ability to sustain a culture of innovation.”
